Can someone explain to me why any college football program would choose to play a game on Friday night? What recruit is going to be able to even see you play on ESPN? The allure of being on national TV isn't so great when no one is watching you. Also, remember a few years ago when all West Virginia had to do was beat a bad Pittsburgh team and they would have played for a national title? That was 2007. A few years later, and they're playing their second Friday night game this season. West Virginia sucks, so maybe they'll take Rich Rodriguez back when he gets fired in a month or so. On to the picks...
Penn State +3 vs. Michigan; This game breaks two big rules I have for gambling. I never bet on Michigan games and I never bet on coaches who wear diapers. But, Michigan is awful and can't beat Penn State in Happy Valley and Joe Paterno is likely to be asleep before the game even kicks off. Penn State has been planning a Whiteout (not talking about their linebackers) since April for this game. A young Michigan team is not going to react well to the extremely hostile crowd. Denard Robinson is coming off an injury and with RichRod's offensive (meaning irritating, not when Michigan has the football) schemes, he's likely to get hurt again tomorrow night. Penn State will not let their drunk fans down and will win big over the Wolverines.- Mississippi State -6 vs. Kentucky; Jimmy from Pippa Passes was going to email me about how good Randall Cobb is, but it's basketball season, so he doesn't care about UK's football squad anymore. Kentucky will inevitably get down by multiple touchdowns in the first half and make a feeble attempt at a comeback, but they just don't have the offensive firepower without Derrick Locke in the lineup. Mississippi State Head Coach, Dan Mullen, is auditioning to take over for Urban Meyer (when Meyer retires at the end of the year) so he won't want to screw up and lose to Kentucky. Mississippi State will give the mouthbreathers who live in Starkville something to cheer about and win by 14.
- Northwestern -3 @ Indiana; Pat Fitzgerald is doing a hell of a job at Northwestern. They played Michigan State really close last week and the Wildcats are poised to make a third straight bowl appearance. I expect the Wildcats to bounce back after last week's loss and dominate the Hoosiers.
- Notre Dame -8.5 vs. Tulsa; Notre Dame has the, "Win one for Declan" mentality going into this game. They were also embarrassed on national television last weekend by a military academy. Those two things make for a long afternoon for the Golden Hurricane (What the hell is a Golden Hurricane? Is it a really crazy golden shower?). Notre Dame wins by double-digits.
- Florida +2.5 vs. Georgia; There are some coaches you just cannot bet against when they're coming off of a bye week. Urban Meyer is one of those coaches. Give that man two weeks to prepare for a team and he's going to beat them. Don't forget that there is no love lost between Meyer and Mark Richt. The Gators are going to be ready to end their current three game losing streak, and they will. Florida wins this game by a touchdown.
- Auburn -7 @ Mississippi; Cam Newton is really, really good. His touchdown run last week against LSU was the second most impressive play of the season (behind Denard's 87 yard TD run at Notre Dame). Don't let the, "Number 1 has lost on the road three weeks in a row!" crowd distract you from how well this Auburn team is playing right now. Plus, Ole Miss has lost to Jacksonville State and Vandy (by 14) this year. They are not keeping this game within a touchdown. Cam Newton has a Heisman-worthy performance and the Tigers roll by 20+.
Last week: 4-2
Season: 24-21-3
