I want to take a minute and weigh in here on some comments being made around the country today regarding SEC football. The art of "holding one's tongue" is not one I seem to have been born with (which works out well when one writes for a daily blog). As we continue in the nothing-real-to-discuss segment of the year -- June-August in the college sports world -- people tend to get a little wackier with ideas the more the boredom/insanity/Saturday-sobriety sets in. Here are a few faves thus far:
Joe Solomon says Tim Tebow will win the Heisman. False. While the opportunity to drop back and pass may be more abundant for Superman this year, that won't necessarily be a good thing. Yes, he's potentially the greatest player/leader/spokesman in NCAA history, but the loss of a key playmaker to the NFL (Harvin), that had previously taken up scout/film time for opposing defenses makes his run at a second stiffarm unlikely. Look for the Sam Bradford/Colt McCoy winner on October 17 to take home the trophy amassing ridiculous passing numbers this year. Other interesting candidates I can get behind are OSU's Dez Bryant (WR), Alabama's Julio Jones (WR, but with no real QB to get him the ball), and Tennessee safety Eric Berry.
More after the jump.
SEC Coaches think Mike Hartline is the 3rd best QB around. Wrong. There are at least 2 players with less experience you can count on to have notedly better seasons. Arkansas' Ryan Mallet (a Michigan transfer) will flourish under Bobby Petrino much like Jake Plummer and Brian Brohm did in college. You can count on marked improvement out of Ole Miss' Jevan Snead as well with another year under Houston Nutt. Sleepers with potential also include LSU's Jordan Jefferson, who was forced into duty some last year and Georgia's Joe Co-... okay okay, I couldn't do it. Point being, Mike Hartline won't be on any POST-season awards lists. Look for that list to finish Tebow, Tebow right-handed, and Mallet.
HogSportsTalk predicts 4 wins (2 SEC) for Mississippi State. Yeah, I don't see it. As a matter of fact, I fail to see the grounds on which the Bulldogs could win a single SEC game. The coach is new, the system is new, there is no quarterback to run the shiny new offense, and looking at the schedule, there are maybe 2 wins total. Maybe. The best chances come in week 2 or 3 against Vandy and Auburn. Still, in those games, I'm taking the experience (Vandy) and the talent (Auburn), and the Kentucky game is away. It's looking like a 2-10 year cowbells. So you better pound Jackson State in September so hard you still feel it come Thanksgiving.
More rebuttals as the interweb spawns more summer nonsense. Hopefully soon there will be actual football news to digest. Get here soon Santa Corso and Herbstreit Claus!
