USFL-fro

So here's an interesting bit of -- er -- news?  The LA Daily News' Tom Hoffarth is reporting that starting in a short 15 months will be professional spring football.  Again.  With apparently the same business model they used in the early 1980's.  Except for the EPIC FAIL part about moving into direct fall competition with the NFL.

Yes, friends, I'm talking about the once-beloved USFL.  The more-than-a-flash-in-a-pan pro football league that not only stole players from the NFL's annual draft, but actually survived 3 seasons through '85 and finally closed up shop in 1987.  The very league that brough near-top quality pro football to the likes of Memphis, Tulsa, and Birmingham.  They already have a sort-of website up, a wikipedia page, and even a fan site!

Among a showboat load of potential cities are a few I'm rooting for:  Anchorage, AK and Austin, TX.

How neat would it be to see a Mid-April game televised from the Land of the Midnight Sun?  (Note to self: find out if it is all daylight or all darkness in the Spring in Alaska).

Or how about taking a walk down a side street at the finest music festival (original music only people!) this side of Mucklewain and right into the game?  There's also always the chance that you could run into Pat Green!

No word yet whether mustaches, afros, and mullets will be mandatory in this league like they were previously, but either way, count me among those pulling for its success.  And the first in line to buy an Alaskan Opies t-shirt.
